Can I get spine surgery in India as an international patient?

Yes. Spine surgeons in India’s accredited hospitals perform discectomy, decompression, spinal fusion, cervical disc replacement, scoliosis correction and fracture treatment, with microscopes, endoscopes, navigation and nerve monitoring. Most spine problems improve without surgery, so the first step is a careful review of your MRI. Najmcare reviews your scans free within 24 hours and arranges your visa letter, transport, rehabilitation and stay. See our Medical Visa Guide.

The spine care ladder

Surgery is not the first answer for most back problems. Care moves step by step, and surgery is chosen only when it is likely to help.

1

Diagnose

Exam and MRI show exactly which nerve or joint is the cause.

2

Non-surgical care

Physiotherapy, medicines and injections come first for most.

3

Decide

You and the surgeon weigh benefits, risks and alternatives.

4

Surgery

The smallest operation that safely solves the problem.

5

Rehab and protect

Core strength and posture protect the result for years.

Why international patients choose India for spine surgery

Spine surgery is among the costliest operations in many countries, with long waits. India offers experienced spine teams, advanced technology and a clear plan, at a fraction of the price.

Lower cost

Often 60–80% less

Compared with typical USA and UK prices, including implants where needed.

Fast

Surgery within days

Many patients have their operation within days of arrival.

Advanced

Less invasive options

Microscopic, endoscopic and navigated surgery in leading centers.

Spine conditions we treat

Select a condition to see typical signs, tests, treatment and the time you may need in India.

Herniated (slipped) disc and sciatica

A disc bulge presses on a nerve, causing leg or arm pain. Most cases settle within weeks to months without surgery. See Pain Management.

Typical signsShooting leg pain below the knee, tingling, weakness, worse on sitting
TestsExam, MRI, nerve tests if needed
TreatmentPhysiotherapy, medicines, nerve root injection, microdiscectomy or endoscopic discectomy if needed
Time in India3–14 days

Spinal stenosis

The spinal canal narrows with age, squeezing nerves. Walking is limited by leg pain or heaviness that eases when you sit or lean forward.

Typical signsLeg cramps on walking, heaviness, numbness, back pain
TestsMRI or CT, standing X-rays
TreatmentExercise, epidural injections, decompression surgery with or without fusion
Time in India10–21 days

Spondylolisthesis and spinal instability

One vertebra slips over another, causing back and leg pain. Surgery stabilizes the segment when the slip is unstable or pressing on nerves.

Typical signsBack pain, leg pain, tight hamstrings, instability
TestsStanding and flexion-extension X-rays, MRI
TreatmentTherapy, bracing, injections, decompression and fusion with screws and rods
Time in India2–3 weeks

Neck (cervical) disc and nerve problems

Neck disc disease can cause arm pain, or, if the spinal cord is squeezed, clumsiness and balance trouble (myelopathy), which needs prompt care.

Typical signsNeck and arm pain, hand numbness, clumsy hands, unsteady walking
TestsMRI of the neck, X-rays, nerve tests
TreatmentTherapy and injections, or ACDF, disc replacement, or decompression
Time in India10–14 days

Scoliosis and spinal deformity

A sideways or forward curve of the spine, in teenagers or in adults. Surgery straightens and stabilizes severe curves. See Pediatric Surgery for children.

Typical signsUneven shoulders or waist, a visible curve, back pain, a rib hump
TestsFull-spine X-rays, MRI, lung and heart checks
TreatmentBracing for growing teens, or corrective fusion with screws and rods
Time in India3–4 weeks

Spinal fractures and osteoporosis

Bone-thinning fractures and injuries can cause sudden back pain. Cement procedures or fixation can stabilize them.

Typical signsSudden back pain, loss of height, pain on standing
TestsX-ray, MRI or CT, bone density
TreatmentBracing, vertebroplasty or kyphoplasty, fixation, bone-strengthening medicines
Time in India5–14 days

Spine tumors and infection (including TB of the spine)

Tumors and infections can destroy vertebrae and press on nerves. Treatment combines surgery with medicines. See Cancer Care.

Typical signsConstant back pain, night pain, fever, weight loss, weakness
TestsMRI, CT-guided biopsy, blood tests, PET-CT
TreatmentDecompression, stabilization, antibiotics or TB medicines, oncology care
Time in India2–4 weeks

Revision and failed back surgery

Pain after earlier spine surgery needs a careful search for the cause, such as a loose screw, adjacent-level disease, scar tissue or a nerve problem.

Typical signsOngoing or new pain, weakness, deformity after surgery
TestsCT, MRI, X-rays, diagnostic injections
TreatmentRevision surgery, injections, nerve stimulation or rehabilitation
Time in India2–4 weeks

Your recovery milestones

A typical path after disc or fusion surgery. Your surgeon adjusts it for you.

Day 0Surgery, rest and pain control
Day 1Stand and walk with support
Day 2–4Wound check, discharge to hotel

Week 6Fit-to-fly review, gentle core exercises
Month 3Return to most activities, fusion healing
Month 6–12Solid fusion and the best final result

Flying and travelling after spine surgery

Plan your trip with your surgeon, and follow these basics to protect your spine and prevent clots.

  • Ask the surgeon when you can fly. It is often 1–3 weeks after smaller operations and longer after fusion.
  • Walk or stand up every hour, and flex your ankles in your seat.
  • Use a small lumbar or neck support cushion.
  • Do not lift your own luggage. Ask the airline and the hotel for help.
  • Wear compression stockings and drink plenty of water.
  • Carry your operation notes and implant details, because screws and rods are MRI-conditional.
  • Request wheelchair assistance at airports to cut long walks.

Questions patients ask about spine surgery in India

Is spine surgery in India safe?

Yes, when done by an experienced spine surgeon in an accredited hospital with nerve monitoring and a good intensive care back-up. Ask who will operate, how many of this operation they do, and which implants will be used.

How much does spine surgery cost in India?

A microdiscectomy may cost about $3,000 to $5,500, a one-level fusion about $6,000 to $11,000, and scoliosis correction about $12,000 to $25,000. You receive a written estimate before travel.

Do I really need surgery for a slipped disc?

Often not. Most slipped discs improve within weeks to months with physiotherapy, medicines and sometimes an injection. Surgery is considered for severe or lasting pain, weakness or loss of bladder or bowel control.

How long should I stay in India?

Disc and decompression surgery usually need 10 to 14 days in total, fusion 2 to 3 weeks and scoliosis 3 to 4 weeks, including hospital stay and a fitness-to-fly check.

What is the difference between spinal fusion and disc replacement?

Fusion joins two vertebrae into one solid unit with screws and rods or a cage. Disc replacement swaps a damaged neck disc for a moving implant. The surgeon advises which suits your condition.

Is endoscopic spine surgery available?

Yes in some centers, for selected disc and stenosis problems, using an 8 to 10 mm cut. It is not suitable for every case, so the surgeon decides after reviewing your MRI.

When can I fly home after spine surgery?

Often 1 to 3 weeks after smaller operations and 3 to 6 weeks after fusion, once your wound and walking are checked. Take clot precautions and ask for airport assistance.

How fast can I get an opinion?

Within 24 hours of receiving your MRI and reports. The opinion is free and carries no obligation.
