Why patients choose India for bariatric surgery

India’s bariatric centres perform a high number of sleeve and bypass operations, mostly by keyhole surgery. You get experienced surgeons, a full team and a clear plan, at a fraction of the cost in most Western and Gulf countries.

Questions people ask

Who can have weight-loss surgery?

It is often considered for a BMI of 35 or more, or 30 and above with conditions such as type 2 diabetes. For people of Asian origin, guidelines allow lower BMI thresholds when there is significant metabolic disease. A surgeon assesses your full health first.

Is it safe?

For suitable patients in experienced centres, serious complications are uncommon, but every surgery has risks. These include bleeding, leaks, blood clots, reflux, gallstones and nutrient deficiencies. Your surgeon explains them before you decide.

How much weight will I lose?

Most people lose a large share of their excess weight over 12 to 18 months, but results vary. They depend on the procedure, your eating habits and activity, and no one can guarantee a figure.

Will my diabetes go away?

Many people with type 2 diabetes see big improvement, and some can reduce or stop medicines. This is not guaranteed, and your doctor will monitor you closely.

How long should I stay in India?

Usually 7 to 10 days, including tests, surgery and early check-ups. Your surgeon decides when you can fly home.

Will I need vitamins forever?

After most procedures, yes. Daily vitamins, minerals and enough protein help prevent deficiencies. Regular blood tests keep you safe.

Can I regain weight?

Yes. Surgery is a tool, not a cure. Weight can return if eating habits and activity do not change, so follow-up and support matter.

Important to know. Bariatric surgery is a major decision and not for everyone. It is usually offered after other approaches have been tried, and it requires lifelong changes to eating and vitamins. Surgery may not be suitable in pregnancy, some eating disorders, active substance misuse or certain medical conditions. This page is general information and does not replace a medical consultation.
