Hearing test explained

How an audiogram shows your hearing

An audiogram is a simple hearing test that maps the quietest sound you can hear at each pitch. The lower the line falls, the louder a sound must be before you hear it. Tap a level to see how the line changes.

Diagnosis

Tests that find the cause

Most ENT tests are quick, painless and done in one or two days.

  • Pure tone audiometry: measures the softest sounds you can hear at each pitch.
  • Tympanometry and OAE: checks eardrum movement and inner ear response, also used for babies.
  • BERA / ABR: a brain-wave hearing test for infants and children who cannot respond.
  • Nasal and ear endoscopy: a thin camera looks inside the nose, throat and ear canal.
  • Video laryngoscopy and stroboscopy: shows how the vocal cords move when you speak.
  • CT sinus, CT temporal bone and MRI: detailed scans of the sinuses, ear bones and hearing nerve.
  • Sleep study: overnight test for snoring and sleep apnea.

Travel smart

Flying to India with an ear, nose or sinus problem

Cabin pressure changes can hurt blocked ears and sinuses. A little planning keeps the journey comfortable.

  • Tell your doctor about a cold, sinus infection or ear infection before booking flights.
  • Use decongestant spray or nasal rinse only as your doctor advises, and swallow or chew gum during descent.
  • After ear surgery or a cochlear implant, ask how long to wait before flying.
  • Carry hearing aids, batteries and processor spares in hand baggage, with a doctor’s letter.
  • Let us know about hearing difficulty. We arrange written instructions, an interpreter and quiet airport pick-up.
  • We help you choose dates and a hotel close to the hospital for easy follow-up visits.

How much does a cochlear implant cost in India?

A cochlear implant with surgery and the device typically costs about $15,000 to $30,000 in India, depending on the implant brand, hospital and whether one or both ears are treated. This is often far below prices in the USA, UK or Europe. You receive a written estimate before you travel.

Is sinus surgery in India safe?

Yes, when performed by a qualified ENT surgeon in an accredited hospital. Most sinus surgery is done with an endoscope through the nose, with no cuts on the face, and many patients go home within one to two days.

Can hearing loss be reversed?

It depends on the cause. Hearing loss from wax, fluid, infection, a perforated eardrum or otosclerosis can often be treated with medicine or surgery. Nerve-related hearing loss is usually managed with hearing aids or, if severe, a cochlear implant.

Can I fly to India with a blocked ear or sinus infection?

Flying with a blocked nose or ear infection can cause painful pressure changes. Speak to your doctor first. Many patients fly after a short course of treatment, and we can help you choose safe travel dates.

How long should I stay in India for ENT treatment?

A hearing assessment or sinus evaluation often takes 3 to 5 days. Tonsil or sinus surgery usually needs 7 to 10 days including review. Cochlear implant surgery and the first device switch-on usually take 3 to 5 weeks.

Do Indian hospitals treat children with hearing loss?

Yes. Paediatric ENT teams offer newborn and child hearing tests, grommet insertion, adenoid and tonsil surgery, and cochlear implants with speech therapy for children.
