Can I get knee or hip replacement in India as an international patient?

Yes. Orthopedic surgeons in India’s accredited hospitals perform total and partial knee replacement, hip replacement, shoulder replacement, revision surgery and keyhole arthroscopy, often with robotic assistance and modern implants. Most patients walk with support the day after surgery and stay in India for about 2 to 3 weeks. Najmcare reviews your X-rays free within 24 hours and arranges your visa letter, transport, rehabilitation and stay. See our Medical Visa Guide.

The joint recovery ladder

Surgery is one step. Good results depend on careful planning before and structured rehabilitation after.

1

Assess

Exam, X-rays and the right scans confirm that surgery will help.

2

Plan

Implant size and position planned, often with 3D imaging.

3

Surgery

Performed by an experienced surgeon, with modern pain control.

4

Walk early

Standing and walking begin within a day.

5

Rehab and return

Strength, balance and a home plan for lasting results.

Why international patients choose India for joint replacement

Long waiting lists and high costs push many patients to look abroad. India offers experienced surgeons, who perform a very high volume of joint surgery, and internationally approved implants, at a fraction of the price.

Lower cost

Often 60–80% less

Compared with typical USA and UK prices, including hospital stay and implant.

No wait

Surgery within days

Most patients are operated on within a few days of arrival.

Modern

Robotic and keyhole options

Robotic-assisted planning and computer navigation are available in many centers.

Total, partial and bilateral knee replacement

Worn cartilage is replaced by metal and medical-grade plastic surfaces, restoring smooth movement. See also Physiotherapy & Rehabilitation.

Shoulder and elbow replacement

For arthritis, severe fractures or rotator cuff arthropathy. Reverse shoulder replacement helps when the cuff is torn.

Procedure1.5–2 hours, anatomic or reverse implant, nerve block for pain relief
RecoverySling for 3–6 weeks, then guided movement, full recovery 6 months

RecoveryWalk the same or next day, sport at 4–12 months depending on repair
Time in India5–10 days, then rehab

Hip and shoulder arthroscopy

Keyhole surgery for hip impingement, labral tears, rotator cuff tears and shoulder instability.

Typical signsPinching groin pain, catching, shoulder weakness, instability
Procedure1–2 hours, repair or reshape, anchors for tendons or labrum
RecoveryCrutches or sling for weeks, gradual strength, 4–6 months to full activity
Time in India7–10 days

Revision joint replacement

Replacing a loose, worn or infected older implant is a complex operation, best done in a center that does many.

Typical signsNew pain, loosening on X-ray, instability, infection signs
Procedure2–4 hours, implant removal, bone graft or special implants, antibiotics
RecoverySlower than first surgery, 3–6 months
Time in India3 weeks or more

Options before surgery

Not everyone needs a replacement. Exercise, weight loss, injections and procedures can help earlier arthritis. See Pain Management.

Typical signsMild to moderate arthritis, pain that still responds to treatment
OptionsPhysiotherapy, injections, genicular nerve ablation, osteotomy, cartilage repair
RecoveryVaries; surgery stays an option for later
Time in India3–7 days

Robotic-assisted and navigated surgery

Robotic arms and computer navigation help the surgeon place implants as planned from a 3D model of your joint. Availability depends on the hospital.

Possible benefitsPrecise alignment, tailored bone cuts, less soft-tissue disturbance
ProcedurePre-operative CT or intra-operative mapping, then robot-guided cuts
RecoverySimilar to standard surgery, often with less early pain

Flying and travelling after joint surgery

Plan your trip with your surgeon, and follow these basics to lower the risk of blood clots.

  • Most patients are cleared to fly about 2–6 weeks after surgery, depending on the operation and airline.
  • Walk the aisle every hour and flex your ankles in your seat.
  • Wear compression stockings and drink plenty of water.
  • Ask whether blood thinners are advised for the flight.
  • Carry your implant card, because metal detectors may pick up implants.
  • Book an aisle seat, request airport assistance and keep medicines in hand baggage.
  • Tell the surgeon about any metal allergy, such as nickel.

Questions patients ask about joint replacement in India

Is knee replacement in India safe?

Yes, when performed by an experienced orthopedic surgeon in an accredited hospital. Ask who will operate, how many replacements they do, and which implant will be used, and keep your implant card.

How much does knee replacement cost in India?

A single total knee replacement often costs about $4,500 to $7,500, depending on the hospital, room and implant. Both knees in one sitting cost about $8,000 to $13,000. You receive a written estimate before travel.

How long should I stay in India after surgery?

Most patients stay 2 to 3 weeks: a few nights in hospital, then rehabilitation and a fitness-to-fly check. Partial knee and arthroscopy need less time.

Can I have both knees replaced at once?

Sometimes. It suits fit patients with both knees badly worn, and means one recovery. The surgeon and anesthetist check your heart and general health first.

How long do artificial joints last?

Many knee and hip replacements last 15 to 20 years or longer. Younger, heavier or very active patients may need ceramic bearings or a later revision. Regular check-ups help.

When can I fly home?

Usually 2 to 6 weeks after surgery, once the surgeon is happy with your wound and walking. Take clot precautions and ask the airline for assistance.

Is robotic surgery better than standard surgery?

It can improve the accuracy of implant placement, but results from experienced surgeons using standard methods are also excellent. Ask what your surgeon recommends and any extra cost.

Will airport security detect my implant?

Metal detectors may pick it up. Carry your implant card and tell the officer. You will not be refused travel.

How fast can I get an opinion?

Within 24 hours of receiving your X-rays and reports. The opinion is free and carries no obligation.
