What is a cochlear implant, and can you have one in India?
A cochlear implant is a small electronic device placed in the inner ear that sends sound signals directly to the hearing nerve. It is for people with severe to profound hearing loss who get little benefit from hearing aids. Experienced implant teams in India's accredited hospitals, made up of ENT surgeons, audiologists and speech therapists, assess, operate on and rehabilitate both children and adults. Children are often implanted from about 12 months of age, sometimes earlier, because early hearing helps speech develop. A cochlear implant does not restore normal hearing, but many people understand speech and enjoy sound again with therapy. Najmcare reviews your hearing reports free within 24 hours and arranges your visa letter, transport and stay. See our Medical Visa Guide, Ear, Nose & Throat and Audiology & Hearing Care pages.
How does a cochlear implant work?
A hearing aid makes sound louder. A cochlear implant works differently: it bypasses the damaged part of the inner ear and sends sound signals straight to the hearing nerve.
Sound processor
Worn behind the ear, it picks up sound and turns it into a digital signal.
Transmitter coil
A small magnet-held coil sends the signal through the skin to the implant.
Implant
The implant under the skin converts the signal into tiny electrical pulses.
Electrodes and nerve
Electrodes in the cochlea stimulate the hearing nerve, which carries the sound to the brain.
Why international patients choose India for cochlear implants
Families come for complete implant programmes: tests, surgery, switch-on and therapy planned together at a cost that makes implants possible.
Often 60-80% less
Compared with typical USA and UK prices, with surgery, device and hospital costs quoted together.
Major implant brands
Leading hospitals work with major international implant manufacturers, so your team can match the device to your needs.
Surgeon, audiologist, therapist
Implant outcomes depend on the whole team, from testing and surgery to mapping and speech therapy.
Travel support
Visa letter, airport pick-up, hospital coordination, a stay near the hospital and an interpreter if needed.
Who can have a cochlear implant?
Select a situation to see who it suits, what happens, recovery and the time you may need in India.
Children born with severe hearing loss
The earlier a child hears, the better speech and language usually develop. Newborn screening and early testing find hearing loss early.
Adults whose hearing aids no longer help
Many adults find that even powerful hearing aids no longer let them follow speech. An implant can restore access to speech sounds.
Hearing loss after meningitis
After meningitis, the inner ear can slowly harden (ossify), which makes surgery harder. Early assessment matters.
Single-sided deafness
Some people with deafness in one ear and normal hearing in the other can benefit from an implant, particularly for localisation and tinnitus. Suitability depends on the case.
Implants in both ears (bilateral)
Two implants help in noisy places and with finding where sounds come from. They can be done in one operation or in two stages.
Brainstem, bone conduction and middle ear implants
Where a cochlear implant is not suitable, other devices can help.
Processor upgrade and device problems
Outer processors are upgraded every few years. If the implant itself fails, it can be replaced.
Switch-on, mapping and rehabilitation
Surgery is the first step. The implant is switched on after the wound heals, then adjusted over several sessions and strengthened by therapy.
Where are you on the cochlear implant journey?
Choose your situation to see what usually happens next and what to send us.
Not sure yet
- What happens next
- An audiologist and surgeon review your hearing tests to see whether a hearing aid or an implant is more likely to help.
- Send us
- Recent audiogram, hearing aid history and speech test results if you have them.
- Time in India
- Often a remote review first; 2-4 days for assessment if needed.
Child recently diagnosed
- What happens next
- Confirmation tests (ABR/ASSR), a hearing aid trial where appropriate, scans of the inner ear and a plan for early surgery and therapy.
- Send us
- Newborn screening, ABR or ASSR report, hearing aid fitting details and any MRI or CT.
- Time in India
- 7-10 days for surgery, then a return for activation.
Adult with failing hearing aids
- What happens next
- Speech tests in quiet and noise with your best-fitted hearing aids, scans and counselling about realistic results.
- Send us
- Audiogram, speech scores, hearing aid details and your history of hearing loss.
- Time in India
- 7-10 days for surgery, then a return for activation.
After meningitis
- What happens next
- Fast review with MRI and CT, because the cochlea can harden over time. Surgery may be prioritised.
- Send us
- Dates of illness, hearing tests, any scans and discharge summaries.
- Time in India
- Plan within days of review.
Existing implant
- What happens next
- Device testing and a review of whether you need a processor upgrade, mapping or surgery.
- Send us
- Brand and model of your implant and processor, the date of surgery and the problem you notice.
- Time in India
- 3-10 days depending on what is needed.
Your treatment pathway
Send your hearing reports
Audiogram or ABR/ASSR, speech scores, hearing aid history, any CT or MRI and the patient's medical and vaccination history.
Implant team's opinion
Whether an implant is likely to help, device options, time in India and an estimated cost. It is free and carries no obligation.
Visa, flights and preparation
Hospital invitation letter for a medical visa. Your team also checks vaccination status, since certain vaccines are recommended before an implant.
Assessment and counselling
Hearing tests, scans, speech and development assessment, counselling and choosing the device with your team.
2-3 hours, 1-2 nights in hospital
The implant is placed behind the ear under general anaesthesia. Most patients go home the next day.
Activation and mapping
After healing, the processor is switched on and adjusted. You can stay for the first sessions or return, then continue mapping and therapy.
Mapping and therapy plan
A written programme for a local audiologist and speech therapist, with video and remote support.
How we help you choose a cochlear implant programme safely
A good result needs the right team and long-term support.
An experienced implant team
ENT surgeon, audiologist and speech therapist who handle implants regularly. We share the team's experience before you decide.
An accredited hospital
JCI and NABH accredited hospitals with an ICU, paediatric anaesthesia, and imaging and testing facilities on site.
Honest expectations
Results vary with age at implantation, how long hearing has been lost and therapy. You get a clear view before you commit.
Support at home
Plans for local mapping and therapy, so you are not left alone after the first visit.
