Why the hospital choice matters most
India has world-class hospitals and many excellent surgeons, but quality is not uniform. The right hospital for you depends on your condition, the team treating it and how well the hospital supports international patients before, during and after your stay.
Instead of choosing on price or a website alone, compare two or three shortlisted hospitals against the same checklist. That is exactly what this guide gives you.
Accreditation: what the badges mean
NABH
Accreditation from India’s National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers, assessing patient safety and quality standards.
JCI
Accreditation from Joint Commission International, a globally recognised standard for hospital quality and patient safety.
Accreditation is a strong signal, not a guarantee of your outcome. Ask which departments and which hospital sites are accredited, and check the current status on the accrediting body’s own website.
The team behind the treatment
The surgeon matters as much as the building. Ask for the name of the specific doctor who will treat you, not just the hospital.
- Qualifications, specialisation and years of experience in your exact procedure
- How often the team performs it, and any published outcomes they can share
- Whether you can have a video or phone consultation before you travel
- Who covers your care if your surgeon is unavailable
Compare hospitals side by side
Fill in one column per hospital and compare honestly. A blank answer is information too.
| Question | What a good answer looks like |
|---|---|
| Accreditation | Clear, current and specific to the department |
| Named surgeon | Experience shared in your exact procedure |
| International patient desk | A dedicated coordinator reachable by WhatsApp or email |
| Language support | Interpreters or staff who speak your language |
| Costs | Itemised written estimate with inclusions and exclusions |
| Infection control | Open about protocols, isolation and sterilisation |
| Follow-up | Teleconsults, reports and a plan for complications |

- Decide and confirm in writingChoose the hospital where answers were clear, honest and consistent, then confirm the plan and dates in writing.

Your hospital shortlist checklist
Red flags to watch for
Guaranteed results
No honest surgeon can guarantee an outcome. Be cautious of promises.
Vague or hidden costs
Refusing an itemised estimate often leads to surprise charges later.
Pressure to pay or book fast
Good hospitals let you compare and decide without urgency tactics.
No named doctor
If nobody will say who treats you, ask again or look elsewhere.
Tip: A hospital may be excellent for one specialty and average for another. Judge the department that will treat you, not just the name above the door.
Frequently asked questions
Is a JCI or NABH hospital always better?
Accreditation is a good sign of safety systems, but your surgeon, your condition and the support you receive also shape your outcome. Use it as one factor.
Should I compare more than one hospital?
Yes. Comparing two or three on the same checklist makes differences in cost, communication and care clear before you commit.
Can I speak to the doctor before I travel?
Most good hospitals offer a video or phone consultation. If not, ask why and consider another option.
What should the estimate include?
Procedure, surgeon and anaesthesia fees, implants or consumables, room category, tests, medicines and the length of stay, with notes on what could change the total.
