India has some of the world’s largest eye hospitals, performing very high numbers of cataract and other eye surgeries. Treatment is mostly day care, with modern technology and much lower costs than in most Western and Gulf countries.
A quick home check
The Amsler grid is a simple test used to notice changes in central vision, such as those caused by macular problems. It does not replace an eye exam.
- Hold the grid about 35 cm (14 inches) from your eyes, in good light. Wear your reading glasses if you use them.
- Cover one eye and look at the red dot with the other.
- While looking at the dot, notice whether any lines look wavy, blurred, broken or missing.
- Repeat with the other eye.

Questions people ask
Is eye surgery in India safe?
Modern eye surgery is generally very safe in experienced hands, but no surgery is risk-free. Possible problems include infection, inflammation, dry eye and, rarely, vision loss. Your surgeon explains them before you decide.
How long does cataract surgery take?
Usually 15 to 30 minutes per eye as day care. Eyes are often done on separate days, so plan for about 3 to 5 days in India.
Am I suitable for LASIK?
You need healthy eyes, a stable prescription and a cornea thick enough. A corneal scan decides this. If you are not suitable, options such as SMILE, PRK or implantable lenses may help.
Can I fly after eye surgery?
After cataract or laser surgery, flying is often allowed within a few days once your surgeon confirms. After some retina surgery, a gas bubble in the eye means you must not fly or go to high altitude until it is gone, which can take weeks. Your surgeon will tell you.
Will I still need glasses?
It depends on the lens or laser chosen and your eyes. Many people reduce their dependence on glasses, but some still need them for reading or fine work.
Can children be treated?
Yes. Paediatric eye specialists treat squint, lazy eye, blocked tear ducts, cataracts and retinopathy of prematurity.
